The 2024 Oscar nominations were announced today, and “Oppenheimer” emerged as the frontrunner with 13 nominations, closely followed by “Poor Things” with 11 nods.
This year’s Academy Awards mark the 96th edition, following the tremendous success of “Barbenheimer” and Christopher Nolan’s World War II biopic, which drew massive crowds to theaters worldwide and earned hundreds of millions of dollars.
Tuesday’s announcement brought some surprises. Greta Gerwig, the director of “Barbie,” did not receive a nomination for best director, although she and Noah Baumbach were recognized for the movie’s adapted screenplay.
Additionally, Margot Robbie, who not only starred in the film but also produced it, was not nominated for her acting performance. Ryan Gosling, who did receive a nomination for his role as Ken, expressed his disappointment, stating, “I am extremely disappointed that they were not nominated in their respective categories.”
Even Leonardo DiCaprio, a previous Oscar winner, did not receive a nomination for his acting in “Killers of the Flower Moon” this year.
However, his co-star Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American to be nominated for best actress. America Ferrera also secured a nomination for best supporting actress for her performance in “Barbie,” after being overlooked for a Golden Globe.
Justine Triet joined the ranks as the eighth woman ever nominated for best director, recognized for her work on “Anatomy of a Fall.” Here is the complete list of this year’s Oscar nominees.
