Carl Weathers, famous for playing Apollo Creed, dies at 76

US actor Carl Weathers, known for his iconic role as Apollo Creed in the Rocky films, has passed away at the age of 76, as confirmed by his family.

In a statement, his family revealed that he “passed away peacefully in his sleep.” Weathers had an impressive career in the film industry, with notable appearances in movies such as Predator alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Happy Gilmore with Adam Sandler.

Beyond his acting achievements, Weathers began his professional journey as an NFL linebacker and was regarded as an exceptional individual who lived an extraordinary life.

His family’s statement further emphasized his significant contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports, leaving an indelible mark that is recognized worldwide and across generations.

They described him as a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend. Weathers showcased his versatility as an actor, effortlessly transitioning between action and comedy genres, evident in his appearances in shows like Arrested Development and his role in all three seasons of The Mandalorian.

Former co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger, who also praised Weathers on social media, acknowledged his legendary status and expressed gratitude for their collaboration in the film Predator.

Weathers’ career spanned over 50 years, during which he appeared in more than 75 films and TV shows.

In 2021, he received an Emmy nomination for his role in The Mandalorian and even directed episodes of the Star Wars series, as well as episodes of Law & Order and Chicago Med.

Additionally, Weathers was recognized for his performances in Action Jackson, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Eight Crazy Nights, Little Nicky, and the Toy Story franchise.

Adam Sandler paid tribute to him on social media, describing him as a truly great man, father, actor, and athlete.

Giancarlo Esposito, the actor known for his role in Breaking Bad, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of his dear friend and brother, Carl Weathers. Esposito described Weathers as one of the most remarkable individuals he has ever had the privilege of spending time with. Similarly, Sylvester Stallone, another co-star from the Rocky series, shared his heartfelt sentiments about Weathers, acknowledging his significant contribution to Stallone’s own success.

Stallone credited Weathers for his invaluable role in the Rocky franchise, emphasizing his brilliance.

In a previous interview with the Detroit News, Weathers humbly referred to himself as a fortunate individual. He recognized the influential figures who came before him, inspiring his own journey towards success.

Weathers expressed his hope to inspire others to also pursue meaningful work.
