Jay Leno:

On Friday, Jay Leno initiated the process of obtaining a conservatorship for his wife’s estate at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Los Angeles. citing her 43-year struggle with dementia in the petition. It underscores that Mavis Leno is currently incapable of formulating and executing an estate plan.

Court documents obtained by NBC News reveal that Leno’s wife, Mavis Leno, is grappling with dementia, hindering her ability to formulate and execute an estate plan.

The petition for the conservatorship explains that Mavis has been experiencing a gradual decline in cognitive abilities and awareness of time and space over the past several years.

Seeking the court’s approval, the petition aims for substituted judgment to facilitate estate planning and implement a testamentary plan that aligns with what Leno believes his wife would choose if she were able to do so.

Given Mavis’s current incapacitated state, the petition emphasizes Jay’s request for the court to appoint him as conservator of Mavis’s estate. The sole purpose of this conservatorship is to file a petition for substituted judgment on her behalf, ensuring that her wishes regarding the disposition of her assets upon her passing are honored.

According to the petition, the couple has shared a relationship spanning over 43 years, during which Jay Leno has consistently managed their finances. Notably, they do not have any children.

The court documents assert Leno’s belief that his wife is in agreement with the conservatorship of her estate, expressing that she has no preference for anyone else to assume the role of conservator in his place.

A subsequent hearing on this matter is scheduled for April 9.
