Alabama has recently carried out its first execution using nitrogen gas

Reports (BT). a criminal named Kenneth Eugene Smith has been executed by nitrogen gas in Alabama, while this method of death penalty has been used for the first time in the world.

Convict Eugene Smith, 58, was convicted of murdering Elizabeth Sennett, a preacher’s wife, in 1989 and lost two final appeals to the Supreme Court.

In 2022, an attempt to execute the perpetrator by lethal injection failed.

According to the report, Smith is the first person in the world to be executed by pure nitrogen gas.

Alabama and two other US states approved the use of nitrogen hypoxia as an alternative method of execution for the death penalty because the drugs used in lethal injection have become more difficult to find.

Execution by nitrogen gas took a total of 25 minutes.

Smith was met by family members, two friends and a lawyer before it took 25 minutes for him to die during the sentencing.

Last week, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights reportedly called for a stay of execution, saying that allowing Smith to be executed by gas would constitute torture , International human rights law prohibits any form of cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment.
